What is known so far about the death toll in the quota movement

 It is known that more than two hundred people have died in the violence around the quota movement.


There is a big gap between the published official data and the private data regarding the number of people killed in the quota reform movement.


As a result, there has been a kind of confusion about how many lives have been lost in the last two weeks of violence surrounding the movement.


According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, reports of the death of 150 people across the country have been reported till Monday due to the violence surrounding the movement. On the other hand, the protesters are claiming that at least 266 people, including students, have died since July 16. Thousands of people were injured.


Meanwhile, the news of the local media also appears to reveal different information about the death. Somewhere it is said that the death toll is 211 people, while some media claims 185 people.

The death toll has exceeded two hundred

BBC Bangla has received information on the deaths of at least 208 people in the last two weeks of violence surrounding the quota reform movement. More than five thousand people were injured.


This information was obtained by talking to more than two dozen hospitals and relatives of the victims in the districts where clashes and violence occurred, including Dhaka.


Out of this, at least 165 people have died in the hospitals of Dhaka city alone.


The rest died in Savar, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Rangpur, Chittagong, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Madaripur and Bogra.


Out of this, most deaths were reported from Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The total number of people who have died there has risen to at least 86 as of Monday.


"60 of them have been brought to the hospital dead," the director of the hospital, Brigadier General Md., told BBC Bangla. Asaduzzaman.


Among other government hospitals in Dhaka, 13 people died in Shaheed Sohrawadi Medical College Hospital, eight in Kuwait-Bangladesh Maitri Hospital, seven in Mugda Medical College Hospital and six in National Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital.

Apart from this, eight more died, four each at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital and Kurmitola General Hospital.


In addition, the information of the death of three members of the police in Dhaka has been found due to violence.


On the other hand, at least 34 people have died in private hospitals in Dhaka due to the violence of the quota movement.


Out of this, most of the deaths have been reported from private hospitals in Uttara and Rampura-Bansree areas.


Because from 18th July to 20th July, these areas became a battlefield.


The highest number of deaths reported outside Dhaka Metropolis came from Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.


At least 10 people have died in this private hospital, authorities said.


Besides, BBC Bangla has received the information of death of at least 33 people from different hospitals of Narayanganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Rangpur, Chittagong, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Madaripur and Bogra.
